AITA Men’s & Women’s National Ranking Tennis Tournament 2019
Kolkata: Local girl Yubrani Banerjee fails to impress as she falters in the Women’s Singles final of just concluded ZEE BANGLA – Central Excise Open AITA Men’s & Women’s National Ranking Tennis Tournament 2019, held at the synthetic courts of the Bengal Tennis Association Complex.
3rd seeded Banerjee seemed clueless in the opening set and displayed a series of errors as she handed over the set to Telengana’s Shaikh Humeira by an easy 1-6. In the second though, Banerjee managed to get her rhythm back and kept a ball extra to frustrate the hard-hitting Humeira as the former won the set by a close 6-4. In the decider, both the players held serves till 5-5, where crowd-favourite Banerjee dropped serve, allowing Humeira to clinch the title eventually by a 6-1,4-6,7-5 victory and walk away with Rs 25,00 as prize money and 40 valuable national ranking points.
In the Men’s Singles final, it was more of a one-sided affair as India No. 8 and the top seed of the draw, Niki Poonacha of Andhra Pradesh won the title by a straight 6-3,6-4 win over Dakshineshwar Suresh and got richer by a prize money of Rs 37,500 and 40 national ranking points.
