PM Modi launches International big cats alliance at commemoration of 50 years of project tiger
New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the program ‘Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger’ at Mysuru University, where he also launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA). This initiative is in line with the PM’s call to form an alliance of global leaders to curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade in Asia, a clarion call he made in 2019.
At the Commemoration, PM Modi emphasized that wildlife protection is a universal issue that requires the cooperation of all countries. The IBCA will focus on conserving the world’s 7 major big cats and will comprise of countries that are home to these big cats. The aim is for member countries to share their experiences and best practices in
conserving the big cats so that fellow countries can act quickly and build the right capacity for conservation.
“Together we will save these species from extinction, and create a safe and healthy ecosystem,” said PM Modi, highlighting the Jaiimportance of international cooperation for the protection and prosperity of biodiversity.
During his speech, PM Modi also mentioned the first successful trans-continental translocation of a big cat referring to the cheetahs that have been brought to India from Namibia and South Africa. He recalled that four cheetah cubs were born in Kuno National Park a few days ago.
This initiative showcases India’s commitment to bringing global partners together to protect wildlife and further biodiversity. It is an effort that India will continue to champion in the near future.
