Kolkata : Fortis Anandapur, a leading hospital in Eastern India, has achieved a medical breakthrough by successfully treating a 74-year-old man with 100% blocked coronary arteries via the Ping Pong Catheter and Rendezvous Technique. The procedure was performed by a team of senior cardiologists under the guidance of Dr. Shuvanan Ray, Director of Cardiology, Fortis Anandpur.

The patient was admitted to Fortis Hospital Anandapur with severe respiratory distress and was diagnosed with acute worsening of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), hypertension, and heart failure with preserved systolic function. The patient’s abnormal heart structure was identified with only two coronary arteries, unlike the three arteries in normal adults. Diagnosis reports revealed 100% blockage in one or both arteries, requiring immediate medical intervention. However, bypass surgery was not an option due to the patient’s damaged lungs, and the doctors adopted the innovative Ping Pong procedure.

Dr. Shuvanan Ray, Director, Cardiology, Fortis Hospital Anandpur, said, “To avoid complications during the procedure, we had to insert two catheters simultaneously, a catheter for an antegrade approach (in the direction of blood flow) and another for a retrograde approach (in the opposite direction of blood flow). The two catheters were used sequentially, keeping one engaged and another out, known as the Ping Pong procedure. As the two catheters were meeting at some point hence named as rendezvous technique. After which, we succeeded in placing the stents and removing the blockage. This is called the Ping-Pong method of surgery and is the first in Eastern India.”

The successful outcome of this procedure has been met with great excitement by the medical community. The Ping Pong Catheter and Rendezvous Technique offer new hope for cardiac patients with chronic heart conditions, especially those who are not eligible for bypass surgery. Fortis Anandapur is proud to be at the forefront of medical innovation and is dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients.

The patient remained free of complications and was discharged within a week, performing regular activities. This achievement is an excellent example of how the application of innovative techniques and advanced medical technology can improve patient outcomes and enhance quality of life.
