Utkala to Host Magnificent Ratha Yatra and Odisha Festival 2023, Showcasing Culture and Devotion
Kolkata, June 17, 2023: Utkala, the esteemed cultural wing of Sri Jagannath Seva Samiti, has unveiled plans to host an awe-inspiring Ratha Yatra and Odisha Festival, set to immerse attendees in the rich traditions and vibrant spirit of Odisha. From June 20th to June 28th, this grand celebration promises to captivate audiences in Kolkata.
The festivities will commence on June 20th with a dazzling roadshow, known as the Rath Yatra, beginning from Khidirpur Jagannath Temple and culminating at Northern Park in Bhawanipur. The beautifully adorned chariots carrying Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra will be the focal point of the procession. Along the route, attendees will be treated to breathtaking performances by the Purulia Chhau dance troupe and the Shri Khola Team, both sponsored by the Government of West Bengal and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
To add to the excitement, Utkala will also present the Odisha Festival, starting on June 21st, 2023. The grand inauguration will be graced by the Honorable Governor of West Bengal, Sri C V Anand Bose. Over the course of eight enchanting days, a myriad of performances will unfold, showcasing the cultural diversity of Odisha. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness captivating dance routines, soul-stirring music, and the intricate beauty of Odisha handicrafts.
One of the highlights of the festival will be the presentation of the prestigious Utkala Samman. This annual award, bestowed since 2003, recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of art and culture. This year, the renowned Odia singer, Mr. Debashis Mohapatra, will be honored with the Utkala Samman for his exceptional talent and remarkable achievements. Audiences will also have the privilege of witnessing Mr. Mohapatra’s enthralling performance, alongside other esteemed artists.
Furthermore, the festival will feature the unveiling of the book “Jagannath in Bengal Eyes,” as well as the Utkala Souvenir & Album on JHUMAR, adding depth to the cultural experience. Attendees can look forward to captivating performances such as Chhou Dance by the Chhauni project from Mayurbhanj and Jhumur songs by Sri Subhash Patra & Troupe from Rairangpur. A classical dance program sponsored by the Government of Odisha and a mesmerizing dance performance by Smt Meera Das & Troupe will also be part of the event.
On June 25th, a thrilling Indian classical dance competition will showcase the talent of school children from different schools across the city. In the evening, the renowned Bhajan Singer and Bollywood artist, Sadhana Sargam, will grace the stage with a soul-stirring Bhajan Sandya performance. The day will also include a traditional Khiri-Pitha competition, adding a delightful culinary element to the festivities.
Expressing his excitement about the festival, Mr. Ashim Kumar Bose, Honorable Councillor of Northern Park, Ward No 70, KMC, Bhawanipore, shared, “I am extremely elated that this year, the Odisha Festival is taking place in our locality. On the day of the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra will bless Northern Park with their presence for a nine-day stay. We are also planning to construct a temple in our area following the Rath Yatra. As the festival reaches its culmination on June 27th, the stage will come alive with the introduction of prize winners, followed by captivating dance performances. The Closing Ceremony promises to be a grand finale, leaving attendees with cherished memories of this remarkable celebration of culture and devotion.
