Kolkata : Recent political turmoil in Bengal has erupted over the deactivation of Aadhaar cards, primarily affecting Matuas, Namashudras, refugees, and SC/STs. Today, protests flooded the streets of Kolkata, led by Ranjit Sarkar, state president of Trinamool Congress Namashudra and Refugee Cell.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has targeted the Center for this action, alleging central deprivation. With nearly 32 crore Aadhaar cards deactivated nationwide, distress grips various districts in Bengal, hindering bank transactions, government scheme benefits, and ration collection.

Ranjit Sarkar highlighted the plight of job card holders under the 100-day work scheme, emphasizing the urgent need for resolution. In response, the state government launched the ‘Aadhaar Grievance Portal of Government of West Bengal’ to address grievances and provide alternative cards.

Thousands gathered in protest, with Trinamool Congress leaders staging a dharna for about four hours. Chief Minister Banerjee assured prompt action, urging calm amid the turmoil.
