Basantlal Jagatramka Smriti Bhawan to Serve as New Hub for Community Initiatives in Kolkata
Kolkata: Marking a new chapter in Kolkata’s social and cultural landscape, Jhunjhunu Pragati Sangh, a socio-cultural organization established by Jhunjhunu migrants from Rajasthan, will open the doors of Basantlal Jagatramka Smriti Jhunjhunu Bhawan on November 9. The inauguration event will be graced by prominent entrepreneurs, including Padma Shri recipient Prahlad Rai Agarwal of Rupa & Co., Hari Mohan Bangur of Shree Cement, and Sajan Bhajanka of Century Ply, along with social workers and community members with roots in Jhunjhunu.
Founded in 1956, Jhunjhunu Pragati Sangh has dedicated decades to fostering cultural connections and supporting welfare projects in Kolkata. The new Bhawan, donated by the family of the late Girdhari Lal Jagatramka, is envisioned as a space for community service and events for people of all backgrounds and social classes. President of the Sangh, Mr. Binod Kumar Nangalia, expressed that the building is a testament to the collective efforts of Jhunjhunu residents residing in Kolkata, with construction entirely funded through community donations.
The building, featuring a ground-floor welfare center, community halls on the first and second floors, and a guesthouse on the third floor for visiting members, aims to provide versatile space for various social initiatives. According to Mr. Narendra Kumar Tulsian, the Sangh’s secretary, the organization has expanded its reach with branches in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, and Kathmandu, and is actively discussing the formation of a national body.
Under the guidance of trustees Bajrang Lal Tulsian, Mahesh Chandra Shah, and Arun Jagatramka, with Mr. Sandeep Khandelia serving as treasurer, the building committee successfully oversaw the project’s completion. The new center not only stands as a tribute to the Jhunjhunu community’s heritage but also as a resource for all, reflecting the Sangh’s commitment to inclusive community welfare.
