Kolkata, 23 December 2024: NSICON 2024, the 72nd Annual Conference of the Neurological Society of India, concluded on a resounding note, culminating in a poignant panel discussion on the critical importance of organ donation. Held in Kolkata after a near three-decade hiatus, the four-day event (December 19-22) brought together over 1,500 neuroscientists, encompassing a diverse spectrum of expertise.

The conference transcended traditional scientific discourse, incorporating vital public health issues and celebrating India’s rich cultural tapestry. Pre-conference workshops honed advanced neurological treatment skills, while vibrant cultural programs and insightful discussions on ethics in medicine enriched the experience.

The poignant panel on organ donation served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address India’s critical organ shortage. With over 6,000 daily deaths attributable to the unavailability of transplantable organs, the panel aimed to dispel myths and encourage greater public participation in organ donation.

Dr. L. N. Tripathy, Organizing Secretary, emphasized, “NSICON 2024 has been a landmark event, addressing societal concerns beyond the realm of pure science. The focus on organ donation is particularly crucial. Every 17 minutes, a life is lost due to the lack of available organs. A single donor can save up to seven lives. This panel was not just an awareness initiative, but a call to action to inspire positive change.”
