Devotees Throng Gangaghats with Fervor for Jivitputrika Vrat – Mothers Fast for Longevity of Sons
Kolkata: On Friday, across the country, the grand celebration of Jivitputrika, a festival celebrated with great faith, took place. This festival is observed by mothers with the hope for the long life of their sons and peace, prosperity, and happiness in their families. At the Ganga Ghat of Ram Lochan in Baranagar, located near Kolkata, a massive crowd of fasting women gathered. To ensure the safety and assistance of these devotees, the organization Surya Seva Samiti set up a service camp. Jitendra Kumar Shaw, the secretary of the organization, explained that several incidents have occurred at this Ganga Ghat, which is why their organization’s members actively played a role. As a part of their service, they provided cool water and worship materials for the fasting women.
Jitiya (also called Jivitputrika) is a three day long Hindu festival which is celebrated from the seventh to ninth lunar day of Krishna-Paksha in Ashvin month. It is celebrated mainly in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand and the country of Nepal as well as Nepali people of West Bengal. Mothers fast (without water) for well being of their children. It is celebrated for eight days in Jharkhand from first moon day to eight moon day in the first half of Ashvin month.
